KUM KHUN PHAAN

Kum Khun Phaan is a traditional Thai house set beside a lake that is occupied by dragon lizards (water monitors) and surrounded by gardens. The house is a short walk south from Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit in the same grounds. There is a nearby elephant ride park where you can tour the local streets in a procession of color. Khum Khun Phaen House in Ayutthaya is a beautiful example of traditional Central Thai architecture, designed to reflect how wealthy Thai nobles once lived. The complex is not just a single building, but a group of interconnected wooden houses arranged around open terraces and raised on stilts, a design that helps with airflow and protection from flooding in Thailand’s tropical climate.
The houses are typically built from teak wood, featuring paneled walls, elevated floors, and steep gabled roofs. Wide verandas, wooden staircases, and open-air walkways connect each section, creating a flowing layout between living spaces such as reception areas, sleeping quarters, and central communal rooms. This layout reflects traditional Thai lifestyle design, where ventilation, shade, and social space are all carefully balanced.
Kum Khun Phaan is set beside a pond with a bridge, trees, and surrounded by gardens that are occupied by water monitors that are commonly called dragon lizards. This house was inspired by the famous Thai literary character Khun Phaen and the house itself serves as a model of aristocratic Thai living from the ancient Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods.
