Ayutthaya Tourist Attractions Map : Temples, Ruins & Must-See Locations
Ayutthaya Historical Park is the main highlight of the city, see the map below for the location. It contains many of the most important ruins from the former capital, including royal temples, monastery remains, Buddha statues, and ancient brick structures. The park is spread across a large area and most of it can be explored on foot if you can. Other options are to hire a bicycle and ride around the walking/bike tracks, then hop off at each area and explore the ruins on foot.
You can also hire a tuk-tuk for the tourist tour that the locals offer. Look out for the operators holding up placards with pictures and prices. These tours take you to each of Ayuttha's tourist spots which you can then explore on foot.
One of the most famous attractions is Wat Maha That, known for the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a banyan tree. This image has become one of the most recognised symbols of Ayutthaya and you can locate this at number 5 on the map below.
The histical park has the other ancient ruins of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Thammikarat, Wat Ratchaburana, and Wat Phra Ram, all located close to each other.
Within the park there is Wiharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit which is an active temple with a large bronze Budda image inside. This temple is busy with locals and you can visit, but remove shoes and hats before entering, talk in a low tone, and wear modest clothing. A small donation would be a nice gesture.
The map also has the location the other popular temples along the Pasak and Chao Phraya Rivers such as Wat Phanan Cheong, Wat Phutthaisawan, Wat Chaiwatthanaram. All of these riverside temples can be visited easily by taking the Pasak river tour.
You will also find Ayutthaya's largest shopping centers on the map below at number 12 & 13. These are located on the outskirts of the city near the highway. There is also the main traditional market of Chao Phrom within the historical city area where you can buy some authentic style Thai food, snacks, handmade craftwork, fresh fruit, flowers, trinkets, clothing, and much more, all at local prices. This lively market is a must-see.
Ayutthaya's famous floating market is located outside the city center, see number 10 on the map. It's a bit touristy but still worth a visit.
