CHIANG RAI ATTRACTIONS
Chiang Rai Travel Guide: 16 Top Attractions and Local Experiences
Chiang Rai province is located in northern Thailand and shares a common border with Laos and Myanmar where the Mekong river seperates each country. Here you will find the infamous Golden Triangle.
Chiang Rai city is famous for its temples of Wat Rong Khun which is also known as the White Temple and Wat Rong Suea Ten which is known as the Blue Temple.
This city is smaller and quieter compared to other tourist destinations such as Pattaya and Chiang Mai but well worth the visit if you want to get away from the beer bars and nightclub scene. Chiang Rai has a more relaxed atmosphere compared to other popular destinations.
The city center also has a large busy night bazaar where you will find a huge selection of food from the stalls offering a casual dining atmosphere with live cultural stage entertainment every night.
The climate is cooler and far less humid than central and southern Thailand which makes it ideal to visit during the dry months from November until February .
You can get to Chiang Rai by luxury air conditioned bus from Chiang Mai. From Bangkok, take the train to Chiang Mai and bus to Chiang Rai. There are also direct flights between Bangkok and Chiang Rai.
See the Chiang Rai Transport Hubs page for more information.
How To Get Around Chiang Rai city
Getting around Chiang Rai city is relatively easy because many central attractions, restaurants and markets are close together. Walking is suitable for exploring areas around the Clock Tower, the Night Bazaar and the old town. Tuk-tuks, Songthaews, and local taxis are convenient for short journeys, but agree on the fare before leaving because the drivers do not like using their meter. They should, but tourists are a good money earner and premium fares are charged if you dont haggle a set price.
You can rent a scooter or car from businesses around the city and airport. A scooter is economical and useful for reaching nearby attractions, but only choose this option if you are an experienced rider with your countries valid motorbike licence and an international licence and travel insurance. Renting a car is generally safer and more comfortable for families planning trips outside the city.
Another popular transport option is to hire a bicycle if you are fairly fit. Most accommodation places rent out bikes which makes it very convenient for you to return at the end of the day.
Ride-hailing services using the Grab app, private drivers that you will find around the streets, and organised tours can be more practical.
