WAT RAJAMONTEAN

Wat Rajamontean is a smaller and beautiful Buddhist temple located on Sripoom Road in Chiang Mai on the northern side of the Old City and next to the Chiang Mai moat.

The intricate details on the outside of the temple with its rich red and gold colours, ornate Lanna style decoration and large seated Buddha image easily catch your attention from the street. The steep entrance stairway is especially stiking with its ornate naga serpent railings, guardian figures and beautifully patterned tiles leading up to the main doorway.

This is a smaller and quieter temple than most and well worth a visit just to see the outside. The temple hall may not be available to enter.

This is an active temple and not really a tourist attraction. Please dress respectfully when entering the grounds and talk in low tones. Shoulders and knees should be covered, shoes should be removed before entering temple buildings, and photos should be taken with care and respect around worshippers and sacred areas. Do not stand immediately in front of any worshipper. Kneeling down before taking any photo from inside a temple in Thailand shows respect if you are anywhere close to worshippers or the Buddha image.

Wat Rajamontean is easy to reach from the Old City because it sits opposite the northern moat canal. From the centre of Chiang Mai Old City, you can walk, take a red songthaew, tuk-tuk, use the Grab app, or local taxi. It is also close to Wat Lok Molee, which is just across the canal moa, so both temples can be visited together. There is a foot bridge very near the temple that you can cross. The bridge itself is also usually decorated and worth seeing.

It is on Sri Poom Road, near the northern side of Chiang Mai Old City.
