WAT UMONG

Wat Umong is one of Chiang Mai’s most peaceful temples which offers a very different experience from the bright golden temples found around the Old City.

This "tunnel temple" as it is often called is set in a leafy forest area near the base of Doi Suthep. Wat Umong has ancient tunnels with quiet meditation shrines set in alcoves, mossy brick walls on the outside, lush garden surroundings with walking paths, and ancient temple ruins within the forest area.

The most interesting feature of Wat Umong is its old brick tunnel like passageways. Situated beneath a raised mound, these cool and dimly lit spaces feel very different from the bright outdoor temple grounds. Inside the tunnels are Buddha images and small shrine areas where you can stop and make merit, or sit quietly and meditate.

Wat Umong’s tunnels are simple and atmospheric, with softly lit rough brickwork and no decorative features. If you are interested in taking some photos within these tunnels, then don't use flash because this will wash out the atmospheric shadows and soft lighting. Using a "night mode" setting on your smartphone/camera should produce a better quality image.

Take a walk in the outside garden area pathways and you will see Buddhist teachings placed among the trees, the old Chedi which is above the tunnels, Buddha images and small shrines, the peaceful lake area and bridge, and places to sit and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Because Wat Umong is an active Buddhist temple, you need to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, talk in a low tone, and remove shoes before entering any sacred area. Show consideration and be respectful of monks, worshippers, and people who may be there for meditation, especially when taking any photos.

Wat Umong is located to the west of Chiang Mai’s Old City, near the foothills of Doi Suthep. It is easy to reach by taxi, using the Grab app, or a shared songthaew. The journey from the Old City is usually fairly short, depending on the time of day and traffic conditions.
This area is a bit out of the way, and a maze of roads, small streets, and walk paths, with few signs in English, so I suggest taking a guided tour so you don't get lost and also have return transport. A Wat Doi Suthep and Wat Umong tour visiting both temples is a popular option.
