BOR SANG UMBRELLA FACTORY

Bor Sang Umbrella Factory in Chiang Mai : Colorful Handmade Crafts and Traditional Paper Umbrellas

The Bor Sang Umbrella Factory is one of the most colorful craft attractions near Chiang Mai. Located in the village of Bo Sang, this area is famous for handmade paper umbrellas, parasols, painted fans, and traditional Northern Thai handicrafts. This factory is one of the best stops along the Chiang Mai–San Kamphaeng Road craft route. Bor Sang can also be known and spelt as Bo Sang.

One of the most interesting parts of visiting the Bor Sang Umbrella Factory is seeing how the umbrellas are made. Within the workshop at the back of the display room you can watch the local artisans preparing bamboo frames, cutting paper, stretching the covering, painting patterns, and adding colorful decorative details. A waterproof laquer is then applied, then the umbrella is dried and made ready for the gift shop.

Within the large displayroom you will also find colorful painted fans, lanterns, paper products, decorative wall hangings, clothing, bags, small gifts, and home décor. There are also paint designs on phone cases, T-shirts, hats, bags.

This amazing local hand-made craft culture makes it possible for you to take home something unique that is not from the usual standard tourist gift shop.

Bor Sang Umbrella Factory is also a great place for photography. Rows of colourful umbrellas, close-up painted patterns, artisans at work, bamboo frames, and bright workshop displays all make attractive subjects. Morning or early afternoon is usually a good time to visit, as the workshops are more likely to be active. Please ask permission before taking photos of any person.

Bor Sang is also famous for the Bor Sang Umbrella Festival which is held annually in the village. During the festival, the streets become especially colourful with umbrella displays, craft stalls, cultural performances, and local celebrations. See the Thailand Festivals page for more details.
