All About Khao Chi Chan

Khao Chi Chan is one of the most distinctive landmarks near Pattaya. Also known locally as Buddha Mountain, this attraction features an enormous seated Buddha image outlined in gold across the face of a limestone cliff.

It's a fairly compact attraction in area and will not take long to see everything, but still worth a visit simply to see the uniqueness of the Buddha image. Computer software created the design of the image, then laser technology was used at night to project and position the Buddha’s outline on the limestone cliff. Workers then marked the cliff face which was easier to see in the dark. They engraved the outline during daylight and then filled it with gold.

The image stands approximately 109 metres high and 70 metres wide, making its true scale difficult to appreciate until you arrive. There are also landscaped gardens, ponds, open viewing areas, and a large shrine in front of the Buddha image for worshippers. Its a very relaxing and peaceful setting away from the hectic Pattaya city streets.

The seated Buddha figure displays the subduing Mara posture, with one hand resting on the knee and the other placed in the lap. This pose represents the Buddha calling upon the earth to witness his enlightenment.

Close-by is the Silverlake winery, gift shop and restaurant, but unfortunately it is closed and reported to be under re-development. No tours are availalbe but the restaurant may possibly be open.

How to Explore Khao Chee Chan Buddha

There are easy walking paths that take you around beautiful landscaped grounds, flower gardens, ponds, and open lawns. You cannot climb the cliff or walk directly beneath. The best view for photography is as further back as possible and away from any tour groups which visit frequently.

How Long to Spend at Khao Chee Chan Buddha

You will most likely spend one hour to see everything and take photos. Allow more time if you intend to take time praying at the shrine. Remove shoes and ensure to wear respectable clothing before entering any religious building.

What to Wear at Khao Chee Chan Buddha

Khao Chee Chan is a sacred Buddhist landmark. You should dress respectfully even though most of the attraction is mostly outdoors except for the large shrine building. Clothing should cover the shoulders, chest and knees. Avoid singlets, very short shorts, short skirts and clothing carrying offensive images or wording.
Sun protection is a must for this open area attraction. Even on cloudy days you should wear a hat, sun screen, and sun-glasses. Comfortable shoes or sandals for walking around is recommended.

Tips On Taking Photos Of Buddha Mountain

Photography is permitted throughout the public viewing areas. The central lawn will give you the classic front-facing composition of the Buddha image on the cliff face. Positions beside the pond and flower gardens can add color to your shots. Ensure you use a small aperture on the camera to keep everything in focus. Slower shutter speeds and a steady hand will be needed. You could steady yourself against some support or use a tripod or monopod.
Frame any shots carefully and don't use a very wide angle lens else the Buddha image will come out small in the shot. Standing further back and using a standard lens can give a better perspective.
Early to mid-morning provides good definition across the cliff face and accentuates the gold outline of the Buddha image. Midday sunlight can create glare, pale skies, and harsh contrast which will produce a washed-out image. Late afternoon shadows can produce a more dramatic effect, but less evenly illuminated photographs giving you very dark shadows.
Drone photography is not allowed unless approved and a permit is sourced.
