WAT CHEDI LUANG VARAVIHARN

Wat Chedi Luang is officially known as Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn. It is located in the centre of the Old City and is revered as one of the most important and impressive temples in Chiang Mai. This historic temple is best known for its massive ruined chedi, with its golden Buddha image set inside one of the upper niches of the ancient brick structure. Wat Chedi Luang dates back to the Lanna period with initial construction in 1385, then completed in 1475 when it was expanded. The Viharn was built next to the Chedi early last century. The Venerable Acharn Mun Bhuridatto Viharn is also in the temple grounds.

Built from brick and later restored in parts, it has steep sides, carved details, niches, elephant figures, and stairways guarded by naga-style decorations.

Wat Chedi Luang has an active temple area with a large viharn, Buddha images, shrines, monks, prayer spaces, and smaller structures around the grounds. You will often see local worshippers making offerings, lighting incense, or sitting quietly in prayer.

The main assembly hall is richly decorated, with traditional Thai and Lanna-style details, golden Buddha images, carved woodwork, and a peaceful interior for worship. If you wish to enter, then remove shoes, talk softly and wear respectful clothing.

Wat Chedi Luang has monk chat from 9am until 6pm daily. You can speak with monks, ask respectful questions about Buddhism or Thai culture, and learn about monastic life. It is important to speak in a low tone, not touch the monks, and wear respectful clothing that fully covers the shoulders as well as the back and front, and to below the knees.

You could greet a monk using the Thai "Wai" by first keeping still, then pressing the palms of your hands together in front of your face, and then make a slight bow. Don't forget to include a nice smile! Just a quick gesture of respect, don't over-do it. You could also make a donation to support the monastery by using one of the donation boxes.

Wat Chedi Luang can be busier during weekends and especially on Buddhist holidays, so weekdays in the morning would be an ideal time to visit if you prefer a quieter time.

The temple grounds are fairly spacious and there are many interesting things to see. As usual, bring plenty of water and wear sun protection.

Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn is located in the center of old Chiang Mai city on Prapokkloa road, just south of the Three Kings Monument.

From the Three Kings Monument or the Sunday Walking Street area, it is a short walk through the historic centre.

From Tha Phae Gate, you could possibly walk, but if you are staying in the Riverside area of Nimmanhaemin, or near Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, a songthaew, tuk-tuk, taxi, or Grab ride is usually the easiest option.

Because Wat Chedi Luang is in the Old City, it is also simple to combine with other nearby temples on foot. A good route is to visit Wat Phra Singh, then walk toward Wat Chedi Luang, continue to the Three Kings Monument, and finish around the museum district or Sunday Walking Street area.
