WAT JED YOD

Wat Jed Yod is one of Chiang Rai’s quieter and more traditional temples. It's not a large temple complex, so expect to spend about a half hour here.

The interior of the temple is different as it is mainly decorated in red and silver instead of the usual red and gold of most temples in Thailand.

This temple is located on a road with the same name and within the city center.

The temple is also written as Wat Jet Yod, Wat Chet Yot or Wat Ched Yod, depending on the English spelling used. The Thai name refers to “seven peaks” or “seven spires,” which connects with the temple’s distinctive seven-spired chedi and roofline. This name can sometimes cause confusion because there is also a famous Wat Chet Yot in Chiang Mai, but the Chiang Rai temple is a different site.

The entrance is guarded by naga serpent figures which is a common feature in northern Thai temple design. These mythical guardians are often placed near stairways and entrances as protective symbols.

Inside the main hall, you will find a large seated Buddha image surrounded by colourful decorations and murals.

It is close to the more active parts of town, including the Night Bazaar and the Clock Tower area, so it can be visited on foot.

Wat Jed Yod is very easy to reach from central Chiang Rai. The temple is located on Jetyod Road, just south of the main city centre and within easy reach of the Clock Tower and Night Bazaar area. If you are staying nearby, you may be able to walk there, but using the Grab app, or hailing a tuk-tuk are the easiest options from most hotels or other city attractions. You may need to walk back to a main road to catch a tuk-tuk for the return jouney.
